Biography

Eilish was born in Los Angeles. Her parents were actors, and she and her brother grew up in an artistic environment. Their parents filled the house with instruments, and Eilish spent her childhood making films, singing in choir, photographing on stage, and writing and performing music. According to her mother, Maggie Baird, “There was a rule in the house that no one would ever force you to go to bed if you played music, music surpassed everything.”

Billie Eilish has always loved photography. When she was small she aspired to be a photographer. Billy’s passion for photography has not faded even as an adult. She believes that it is essential to take photos throughout your life, otherwise, you may not remember some important moments. So, the memories should be alive and vivid.

Eilish enjoyed dancing as a teenager, and it was thanks to dance classes that she rose to musical acclaim. In 2015, a dance teacher asked Eilish to produce an original composition that would accompany a dance number. She and her brother composed the ballad “Ocean Eyes”. When they finished it, they uploaded the track to Soundcloud so that Eilish’s teacher could access it, and seemingly overnight, the song became viral.

The beginning of a creative career

A year later, she made a music video for “Ocean Eyes”, signed with Darkroom and Interscope Records, and released her second single, “Six Feet Under”. In 2019, she released the mini-album “Don’t Smile at Me”, which featured collaborations with Khalid and Vince Staples. The album peaked at number 15 on the charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.

In 2019, Eilish and her brother, O’Connell, presented the album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” The brother and sister recorded the music for this album in their bedroom using minimal equipment. By June of the same year, the album received two platinum certifications and became the best-selling record in the United States.

Eilish and O’Connell’s musical work has sometimes been described as “weird pop,” “ghost,” “destructive,” “terrible,” and “eccentric.” Billie Eilish has repeatedly mentioned the fact that her music has been influenced by Justin Bieber, SBTRKT, Aurora, Avril Lavigne, The Beatles, Amy Winehouse, My Chemical Romance, Daniel Caesar, Frank Sinatra and Tekno. She has also performed cover versions of songs by Drake, Michael Jackson, Elvis, Carla Morrison, Robyn, Labrinth, Rob Dickinson, and Frank Ocean on live broadcasts and recordings.

At the 2019 Grammy Awards, which took place in January 2020, Eilish won five awards. She became the first woman and youngest person to win four top Grammy Awards: New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (both for “Bad Guy”) and Album of the Year (for “When We All Fall Asleep”). In addition to winning Record, Song, and Album of the Year, O’Connell received two more Grammys. One was for the album “When We All Fall Asleep” and the other was for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.

Cooperation with her brother

Billie Eilish’s older brother Finneas has become his sister’s irreplaceable companion, co-writer and producer. Even when they achieved widespread popularity, the siblings continued to write music at their home in Highland Park.

Finneas, who released his solo album “Blood Harmony” in October 2019, has also written and produced songs for other popular artists such as Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and Camila Cabello.

Composing soundtracks

The track “No Time to Die” was released in 2020 as the soundtrack for the 2021 James Bond film of the same name. In 2022, the song received the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

In 2021, Eilish produced her second studio album, “Happier than Ever”. It was distinguished by explicit songs, some of which dealt with issues surrounding her popularity.

In 2022, Eilish and O’Connell composed three original songs for the soundtrack of the animated film “Turning Red”. The following year, Eilish worked with rapper and songwriter Labrinth on the ballad “Never Felt So Alone”. Eilish and O’Connell also recorded the song “What Was I Made For?” for the film “Barbie” (2023). In 2024, it won Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards and Best Original Song at the Golden Globes. Additionally, it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

Eilish used her time in the spotlight to share her experiences with depression and self-harm and tried to raise awareness about mental health issues. She also talked about her struggle with Tourette’s syndrome. A documentary on her life, “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry”, was released in 2021.

Billie Eilish’s influence

Billie Eilish has quickly become one of the most well-known and influential figures in modern pop culture. At the age of 22, her multifaceted talents as a singer, composer, and overall creative genius have earned her multiple awards and an amount of respect usually reserved for experienced artists.

Billie Eilish also became the youngest-ever recipient of the prestigious Webby Person of the Year Award. Shortly after, in an Instagram post, Eilish wrote:

“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the members of the Academy for recognizing me and what we have done over the past two years. It means more than you can imagine.”

In terms of influence, it’s hard to put into words how much of a cultural force Eilish has become at such a young age. Former US President Barack Obama said it best when he said:

“Billie Eilish’s candid lyrics reflect the uncertainty and spiritual quest that so many of us are experiencing these days, especially after the pandemic. Her poignant observations are deeply rooted in the challenges of our modern era, and they are delivered with empathy.”

But perhaps the most significant accomplishment was best noted by Eilish herself. In an interview with Lacuna, she stated:

“I’m just trying to convey the realities of what it’s like to be a young person today – fears, anxieties, self-doubts, and, most importantly, the search for meaning. That’s what matters to me.”
