Read more about the famous tennis player, four-time champion of the United States of America, on losangeleska.com.

Pauline Betz’s childhood and passion for tennis

The future athlete was born in Dayton but grew up in Los Angeles. Pauline first picked up a racket when she was nine years old. The racket was exchanged for her parents’ collection of pipes. But her first tennis teacher was her mother, who taught physical education at school. Pauline used to play tennis with her brother all the time. When she was 14, her mother took her to her first tournament. In the second tournament, Betz reached the final.

In 1939, an unknown girl named Pauline Betz won the United States Championship. She immediately entered the list of the top 10 best tennis players in the country.

Career development: unofficial world number one among women

Pauline was an unprofessional tennis player, so she did not receive money for her performances. She continued to play and earned for her living in a local coffee shop. However, a coach at Rollins College offered Betz a scholarship to study. Thus, the tennis player studied at the Faculty of Economics and played at the same time. Since 1941, Pauline has reached the finals of the United States Championships six times in a row and won four times.

In addition, in 1941 and 1943, Pauline Betz became the absolute indoor champion of the United States of America. Billie Jean King managed to repeat her result only 25 years later. In 1943, the tennis player won all the United States championships (grass, indoor and outdoor).

The year 1946 was a landmark for Betz. After the end of World War II, American tennis players took part in European tournaments for the first time in seven years. Betz won a confident victory here as well, reaching the final of the French Open. She also won her fourth US Open title. As a result, at the end of the season, Pauline Betz was unofficially recognized as the world’s first women’s racket. The American’s portrait was featured on the cover of Time magazine.

Coaching and further fate is connected with sports

Having achieved success, Pauline Betz began to coach. She worked at the Racket Club in Palm Spring, a place frequented by many Hollywood stars. As a result of such interesting acquaintances, the tennis player married Bob Eddy, a journalist for the Washington Times-Herald. From time to time, Pauline participated in various tournaments, including those for professionals. By 1960, Betz had won seven championship titles. In 1959, when she was five months pregnant, she defeated her younger rival Althea Gibson.

In 1965, Pauline Betz was inducted into the National Tennis Hall of Fame. The tennis player also opened her own tennis club. After her sports career, Betz continued to lead an active lifestyle. She played basketball, golf, table tennis, and even at the age of 77, played for the first team of her own tennis club.

Betz’s husband died in 1982, and Pauline herself passed away when she was 91 years old.
