Ruth was the tenth child in the family. The girl was raised by her sister and her husband from early childhood because her mother had health problems. From the age of ten, Ruth worked in her brother-in-law’s pharmacy.

In 1938, Ruth married Elliot Handler and moved to Los Angeles. Seven years later, the couple, together with their friend Harold Matson, decided to start a company that manufactures photo frames. It was created in a garage and was named Mattel.

The history of the Brabie creation

Mattel gradually began to develop thanks to musical toys and accessories for dollhouses.

In 1959, Ruth invented the Barbie doll. It was named after her daughter Barbara. The idea of this creation came to a woman when she watched her daughter Barbara play with her friends. The girls did not like ordinary baby dolls but preferred adult dolls made from paper. The latter had to be cut out of cardboard together with various paper images. Girls changed dresses, suits and skirts. Ruth realized that children lack an adult doll with which they would play and model various life situations. Thus, a lush Barbie doll in a swimsuit was created.

The popularity of the doll and the development of the company

It should be noted that at first the doll caused a flurry of indignation because of its feminine forms. However, Ruth appealed to children with the help of television and advertised Barbie. A few years later, Barbie became extremely popular and the revenue from sales amounted to one hundred million dollars (1965).

Later, the company decided to create a friend of Barbie. He was named Ken after Ruth’s son and Barbara’s brother Kenneth. Next, Barbie’s best friend Midge was created, as well as her sister Skipper. As of 2002, Barbie officially had six siblings and 31 friends. Moreover, the company started to produce clothes, accessories, stationery, etc.

In 1967, the first black doll was made. In addition, some dolls were created as copies of famous people or television characters.

Subsequently, a series of cartoons with Barbie, magazines and books were created.

The Barbie doll also started to master various professions. In the 1960s, one could buy a Barbie fashion designer, singer, ballerina, nurse, nanny and teacher. Over time, Barbie’s professions became more creative and included astronauts and even the president.

In the 1980s, the company began to produce the collectible Barbie series. These dolls are not for play. They are dressed up by famous designers and cost a fortune.

For several decades, Barbie was considered one of the most popular toys in the world. There was a time when every second, three Barbies were bought in the world. However, time flies and modern girls prefer other toys. Barbie became unpopular. Instead, children choose different kinds of dolls, such as Bratz. By the way, the Mattel company sued the author of Bratz, Carter Bryant, for working at Mattel and stealing the idea of a new doll. The court upheld the lawsuit and Bratz was withdrawn from production. However, the case resumed, and five years later, Mattel was obliged to pay the company MGA Entertainment, which produced Bratz, $88.5 million for spreading false information.

The life of Ruth Handler after the creation of Barbie

In the early 70s, Ruth was diagnosed with breast cancer. The woman underwent an operation to remove the mammary gland. After it, Handler was devastated and lost her self-confidence. The woman could not find a high-quality breast prosthesis for a long time. That is why she decided to make it by herself. To manufacture female breast prostheses Handler founded the company Ruthton Corp together with Peyton Massey. Ruth never received much revenue from it but she worked on this project deliberately.

Due to health issues, Ruth paid less attention to the Mattel company. In 1975, the Handlers left it. Three years later, the woman was accused of fraud and false reporting. Ruth Handler was fined $57,000 and sentenced to community service. However, she did not admit her guilt and noted that due to her illness she paid little attention to business development.

Despite her problems with the law, Ruth won many awards, became the Los Angeles Times Woman of the Year in Business and more. She also received an award for her achievements in volunteering.

In 2002, Ruth Handler passed away and was buried in Los Angeles.
